CONVERGED TELECOMMUNICATIONS POLICY and REGULATIONS (CTPR)

MASTER CLASS

Industry Landscape

The technology that serves as the bedrock of the global telecommunications industry has evolved at a frantic pace. The dizzying speed of technological advancement (4G, LTE and now 5G) has placed industry players, equipment manufacturers and vendors under cost and delivery pressure to provide these technologies to an increasingly technologically savvy and demanding public. Industry regulators and practitioners have not been spared either. These evolving technologies and convergence in the telecommunications space have placed increased pressure on regulators and practitioners worldwide to keep up with the latest technology trends, spectrum management issues, policies and regulatory frameworks and guidelines, while balancing national developmental and business concerns with those of a consumer-led social media, digitalised and converged world.

Hence, there is a need to ensure that the policy and regulatory framework for the Telecoms and ICT sectors continue to evolve, develop and facilitate the progressive growth of the industry for the benefit of all stakeholders in the industry.

On this note, it is thus imperative that the widening gap in regulatory knowledge and skill sets of industry stakeholders be addressed. Current research indicates that there is a dearth of postgraduate and advanced training programmes that seek to address this imbalance within the confines of the converged telecommunications ecosystem, thus, the stage is set for an approach to address this gap within the industry.
